Winter Solstice at the The Australian Standing Stones National Celtic Monument
Overview
Winter Solstice at the Australian Standing Stones. Come and enjoy the shortest day of the Year.
Dawn at the Winter Solstice is the principal alignment of the monument, marked by a set of six Avenue Stones opening to the north-east into which the Sun's rays at first light shine from the horizon and illuminate the central golden Australis Stone.
It's a beautiful sight, it will be a fulfilling experience to kick off a big day at the Australian Standing Stones.
Sunrise is just after 6.45am - arrive early, by 6:30am to immerse yourself in the atmospherics of the growing dawn light. There's plenty of parking on Watson's Drive.
Make sure you're rugged up - it will be cold, possibly frosty - wear a beanie or hood too.
Greet the solsticial dawn with a recollection of Celtic Winter Solstice wren tradition and symbolism, associated with St Stephen's Day in the Celtic lands.
Shimmy in the Glen recreate Kate Bush's iconic music video clip for her 1978 hit song, Wuthering Heights. Dress in red and black and gather at the Australian Standing Stones this winter solstice at Midday.
They will have the Winter Solstice fundraising raffle from 12.30pm at Crofters Cottage - where you can enjoy coffee, cake and lunches. Crofters Cottage will be open 8.30am to 2pm.
