One of the highlights of the 2013 netball season will undoubtedly be the five test matches hosted by the Australian Diamonds in a battle of international proportions.
The first three games will see the Diamonds play arch-rivals the New Zealand Silver Ferns before a two-test series matches them up against the Malawi Queens on the Gold Coast and in Wollongong on the evening of October 16.
You don’t want to miss this event, as it will be the last time you’ll get to see the Australian Diamonds doing what they do best before the 2014 Commonwealth games in Glasgow.
New South Wales’s WIN Entertainment Centre will host the Wollongong match as its first international event, marking it as the tenth city in Australia to hold such games and the only one to host a test between the Queens and the Diamonds on Aussie turf.
If you head along, you can expect to see Malawi’s famous flair and style on the courts – part of the reason why they are ranked fifth in the world of this fast and physical game.
Wollongong is a growing city and has plenty to offer aside from its sports arenas, so book in your Wollongong accommodation and plan a few days for some additional sightseeing.
Head to the historic area of Belmore Basin for its vibrant restaurant and cafe scene for lunch or dinner and check out the stunning surfing beaches nearby if you’re keen to try out your skills on the waves.
Alternatively, do as the locals do and plan a day at Bellambi Beach just north of the CBD and home to two kilometres of perfect golden sands and picturesque mountain views.
If you’re travelling to and from Sydney and want to see some of the gorgeous scenery in the area, take the tourist route along the Grand Pacific Drive which goes through the Royal National Park, Bald Hill lookout at Stanwell Park and the beautiful beaches to the north of the city.
