Mum bloggers share their favourite NSW destinations

24 June 2014

The winter school holidays offer a great opportunity to explore New South Wales. We asked eight parent and lifestyle bloggers for their favourite NSW kid-friendly holiday destinations.

Ricki Waller at StayAtHomeMum

“The Snowy Mountains are beautiful to visit any time of the year but in winter…wow! There is no need to pack up the kids and head to Canada or New Zealand to see the snow and try the various winter activities on offer, from snowshoeing to snowboarding. During the summer months, the Snowy Mountains’ hotspots like Lake Jindabyne and Thredbo village, are still ripe with family friendly activities including cycling tracks and trout fishing, but the snowfields are magical from June-August.”

Beth Macdonald at Baby Mac

“My favourite winter destination is the Southern Highlands of course! You can explore the natural beauty of the countryside, do some amazing shopping, eat some amazing local produce – from potatoes to milk straight from dairy farms – drink fabulous local wine, and sit by the fire on a cold night. Best of all it’s just 1.5 hours from Sydney!”

“Our favourite place to travel in New South Wales has to be Kingscliff on the Far North Coast. It’s quiet enough that you feel relaxed as soon as you step foot inside the town, and busy enough to be home to beautiful cafes, quaint shops and some of the most beautiful beaches you’ve ever seen in the world. We visited year after year until we decided that we wanted to move closer. Now we live close to Kingscliff, but it’s still a place I happily retreat to when I need a beautiful break from busy life.”

“One of my favourite things to do whenever I visit Sydney, is to jump on a ferry from Circular Quay and ride out to Watsons Bay. The views of the harbour, the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge are just spectacular from the water. It feels amazing to be among all the colourful sailboats on a beautiful sunny day. Then I sit under the great big shady trees in the park at Watsons Bay and enjoy the most delicious takeaway fish and chips from Doyles on the Beach, while taking in the view. It’s a perfect way to spend the day!”

“My family’s fave holiday destination in NSW is Byron Bay. That place has everything I need in the perfect getaway including beautiful beaches, awesome surf, gorgeous shops and the best cafes and bars in Australia to sit and people watch. Having three active boys we like to get out there and explore the hinterlands before heading to one of the many tranquil spas for a massage. The food is to die for and you are completely spoilt for choice when it comes to gorging on the most incredible food and produce. The local markets are a must do as is heading up to the lighthouse. As for places to stay – try renting a holiday house from the local real estate or if you want to be totally spoilt, go for The Byron at Byron Bay Resort and Spa. Byron Bay is the one place we will never ever tire of running away to.”

Stacey Roberts at Veggie Mama

“I like the laid-back vibe of Byron Bay – it’s a great place for families, full of good food, beach hangs, and quirky shopping.”

Kristy Vallely at The Imperfect Mum

“I love NSW, in fact my husband and I spent our 10 day honeymoon at Crescent Head.  What a stunning location – beautiful beaches backing onto gorgeous bushland.  We rented a little log cabin in the woods, spent the nights by the fire and our days on the beach.  I can’t wait to take our kids there one day. I highly recommend this beautiful location to anyone looking at getting away from it all.”

Karen at Miscellaneous Mum

“My favourite destination to visit in NSW is South West Rocks. It is an idyllic coastal town, famed for family-friendly beaches, walks, great fishing and diving. A trip isn’t complete without visiting Trial Bay Gaol – its history is fascinating. Our big family converges there over the holidays- I’m now passing these precious memories down to my kids. I even had my wedding reception at the local surf club!”
