Spaces in Between explores the world of two of Australia’s most accomplished and talented artists, both of whom have been developing their art over the last 50 years. While the art of both Virginia Coventry and Jan King is abstract and at first glance seems to be very different, these two artists are in fact very close in their approach to art making - responding to light and space. They fully understand the space in between and that their art is only fully reached by contemplation and an intensification of vision by the viewer. Coventry through the use of light and King through negative space, those parts of the art that are in between the compositional elements.

Jan King is known for her sculptures made from waxed and painted steel, which she exploits to its full potential to create fluid and lyrical works that contradict our expectations of this material. Virginia Coventry’s work explores relationships between light, spatiality and colour, using paint and composition to create vibrant surfaces that change in response to different light and angles of view. Both artists have exhibited widely throughout Australia and overseas, and their works are included in a number of important public and private collections.

This exhibition is curated by Max Dingle OAM.
