Situated on the western foreshore of Lake Macquarie, Morisset is the perfect place to explore the saltwater haven that’s home to resident dolphins and sea turtles. Bring your own kayak or paddleboard, or hire one from Lake Mac Kayak and Bike Hire, a mobile hire service that delivers equipment seven days a week.

Loop the Lake offers cruises around the secluded waterways of Lake Macquarie. If you want to cast a line, there are many places along the lake where keen anglers converge to catch bream, tailor, flathead, kingfish and more. There is an abundance of fish in the lake and you can launch a boat from the ramp north of the picnic area.

Hiking & bush walks

Explore the coves and headlands of the Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area, 20min east of Morisset. Whether you like to bushwalk by the peaceful lapping of water on the shore, enjoy long relaxed family picnics, or prefer to kayak with a line off the side, this accessible park is a delight.

Watagans National Park is a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, 4WD touring and camping. There are various trails that wind through beautiful rainforest scenery. Camp beneath the stars at the secluded Gap Creek campground, where you’ll also find a walking track to the waterfall.

Drive to Monkey Face Lookout and marvel at the Watagans Mountains, which form the jagged peaks of the Great Dividing Range. A short drive away is Boarding House Dam picnic area, located in a lovely temperate rainforest next to a picturesque creek and dam, and the Circuit track, sections of which are carpeted in moss.

Morisset is a 1hr 45min drive north of Sydney and just under an hour from Newcastle. You can catch the train direct from Sydney to Morisset, which takes just over two hours, or fly into Newcastle Airport. Accommodation in the area includes motels, houses to rent, B&Bs, holiday parks and campgrounds.
