Between Wallis Lake and the Pacific Ocean, Forster is the heart of the Great Lakes. Hire a houseboat for a holiday on the stunning lakes and waterways. On the oceanside, Main Beach stretches south to the Forster Ocean Baths, with many nearby beaches adorning the peninsula to Pacific Palms.

Along the way, Seven Mile Beach stretches south from nearby Cape Hawke to Booti Hill and the Ruins, a great spot for fishing and surfing. For spectacular views visit Cape Hawke lookout in Booti Booti National Park, situated between lake and the sea. Surrounded by rainforest, it’s a great spot for walking.

Fishing and diving

Forster offers superb fishing options, from deep-sea charters to lake, rock and river or beach fishing. At Fisherman’s Wharf, you can also join Dive Forster for memorable scuba experiences, such as visiting a Grey Nurse Shark site. They also do day charters and ocean swimming with dolphin tours.

Whale watching

Whales migrate along the coast between May and November, and you can take a whale-watching cruise with Amaroo Cruises. Time your visit with one of the great local events include the Jeff Wilcox Memorial bodyboarding competition, or the Lakeside Festival in the twin seaside town of Tuncurry.

Getting there and where to stay

Forster is the vibrant heart of the spectacular Great Lakes region, a 3hr 45min drive from Sydney and 35 minutes’ drive from Taree Airport. Coaches and trains also run from Sydney, via Newcastle. You can make this a memorable stop on a North Coast road trip.

You’ll find plenty of accommodation options in Forster to suit various budgets, from hotels, motels, and cottages to bed and breakfasts and holiday parks. There are also lovely riverside and beachside campgrounds in Myall Lake National Park and Booti Booti National Park.


Taree Airport

Fly into Taree Airport

Taree Airport is 7km from Taree’s town centre. Use the taxi services to make the short trip northeast. Alternatively, rent a car from the hire services available at the airport and explore the regions of Manning Valley and the Great Lakes at your own pace.

Fly Pelican operates direct flights between Sydney and Taree six days a week, and flies to Newcastle once a week. For other major Australian cities, connect via Sydney to travel into Taree.
