Tocumwal

On the banks of the magnificent Murray River, this historic town entices with its raft of water sports, beautiful river beaches and aviation heritage. Part of The Murray region and surrounded by a stunning red gum forest, Tocumwal is ideal for fishing, camping, bird-watching, aerial adventures and relaxing by the river.

Choose from 24 riverside beaches close to town, and go waterskiing, swimming, canoeing, boating and fishing. Set up camp on Ulupna Island, a river island in the Barmah National Park, just outside of town. Tocumwal Foreshore Park, is home to the iconic Big Murray Cod, a fiberglass structure which celebrates the prized local catch.

Tocumwal is a renowned destination for gliding. You can take a scenic glider flight over the countryside with Sport Aviation. The Tocumwal Aerodrome, also known as McIntyre Airfield, is famous for its training role during World War II. Learn about the wartime history at the Tocumwal Historic Aerodrome Museum.

You’ll find more local heritage at the Tocumwal Railway Heritage Museum, which includes photos and memorabilia dating back to 1908. There’s also a working model train display and tea rooms. At Chrysties Museum, discover an amazing private collection of eclectic antiques, collectibles and rare finds.

Other things to do include teeing off on Tocumwal Golf Club’s 36-hole championship course, browsing the monthly Tocumwal Foreshore Variety Market and joining a sightseeing tour with Bushliner Buses. A short drive north is the Tocumwal Blowhole and the Rocks, a granite outcrop and significant indigenous site.

Tocumwal is three hours’ drive from Melbourne and seven hours from Sydney. You can also fly or get the train to Albury and rent a car for the scenic 1h 40min drive to Tocumwal. There are plenty of accommodation options, from riverside camping to motels and farm stays.

Albury Airport is 5km from Albury’s city centre. Use the shuttle bus and taxi services at the front of the terminal to take the short journey southwest into the city centre. Alternatively, rent a car from the hire services at the airport and explore the region at your own pace.

Albury is home to the third-busiest airport in regional NSW with more than 180 flights. QantasLinkRegional Express and Virgin Australia operate daily direct flights to and from Sydney. Regional Express also operates daily flights to and from Melbourne.
