Cycle or walk the scenic Wagirra Trail, a six-kilometre journey along the riverbank that captures Wonga Wetlands, a birdwatcher’s paradise, and the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk. Created by local Aboriginal artists, the sculptures tell the story of Aboriginal history and the cultural significance of the Murray River.
Visit Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA), one of the best regional galleries in Australia, and you’ll be delighted by contemporary art and important indigenous works – you can even book a free guided tour. Another great local arts experience is watching the Flying Fruit Fly Circus perform and taking circus classes.
An exciting local events calendar is brimming with shows, festivals, exhibitions and markets. The Kiewa Street Market is held every Sunday. Other events include the garden and flower show Gardenesque in October, and the five-day reading, writing and storytelling festival Write Around the Murray in September.
Albury-Wodonga is a 3h 30min drive northeast of Melbourne and 5h 30min southwest of Sydney. You can also fly into the busy Albury Airport. Arriving by train at the grand Albury Railway Station is a wonderful experience. You’ll find plenty of accommodation options including hotels, apartments, B&Bs and holiday parks.
