Lake Hume and Hume Weir Spillway

Attraction - Historical Sites and Heritage Locations, Natural Attractions, Parks and Gardens

One of Australia’s most important storage reservoirs, Lake Hume has a capacity six times the size of Sydney Harbour and is set in mountainous countryside. The dam features a concrete spillway and earthen embankment 1.6km long. Enjoy the Weir Wall Walk, crossing over the actual spillway by foot gives a great perspective of the operation of the spillway and the its importance in the Murray Darling System. Walk the shoreline or watch the water flow over the spillway. Also, don’t forget to see the historic marker, which recalls the crossing of the Murray River in this area by explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell.

Lake Hume may be a man made achievement but it is also a beautiful and important natural resource. The strong and forceful waters of the Murray River, and the crisp clear flows of the Mitta Mitta River feed this stunning lake. A capacity 6 times that of Sydney Harbour and a kilometre of shoreline for everyday of the year means there are plenty of quiet spots for you to reflect, enjoy a picnic full of regional goodies or cast a line for that elusive fish.

Enjoy stunning views of Lake Hume from the Mt Granya and Mt Lawson State Parks, hire a canoe and explore the many coves and inlets of Lake Hume, or relax at one of the resorts that stretch along its shores. There are some terrific lookouts that provide spectacular views over Lake Hume. Many foreshore parks on Lake Hume provide visitors with boating ramp access, BBQ and picnic facilities and fantastic aspects over the Lake, Bethanga bridge and Bellbridge township.

For some more fast-paced action why not try windsurfing, parasailing and waterskiing, just some of the popular activities and the waterway attracts catamarans, dinghies, windsurfers yachts and powered crafts.
