SOSSA - Southern Oceans Seabird Study Association Inc

The Southern Oceans Seabird Study Association (SOSSA) conducts studies into the natural history of the Illawarra and it's environments.

Founded by the members of the New South Wales Albatross Study Group (NSWASG) in 1994, SOSSA was set up to be an umbrella organisation for many study groups concerned with studies of Southern Ocean biodiversity.

Available trips include Pelagic adventure tours, whale and sea bird watching and game fishing.

Tours

  • SOSSA Tour Package The SOSSA Pelagic Tours depart out of Wollongong Harbour (Belmore Basin) at 7am and generally The SOSSA Pelagic Tours depart out of Wollongong Harbour (Belmore Basin) at 7am and generally return at 4.30pm. During this time the boat will travel out to the edge of the continental shelf which is about 20 nautical miles east of Wollongong.

The ocean is an extremely unpredictable environment which can yield albatrosses and killer whales one day and a vast expanse of lifeless water the next. The SOSSA team will always work hard to find the right spots based on the conditions of the day but don't guarantee anything. If you have 'target' species then maximise your chances of seeing them by consulting the SOSSA month-by-month birding guide on their website.
