Botanic gardens and nature reserves in NSW
National parks and nature reserves cover more than 7 million hectares of New South Wales, with diverse environments ranging from rainforests, to pristine marine parks, to vast outback landscapes, to mountain ranges and World Heritage listed areas. There are over 850 protected areas to explore, rich in biodiversity and natural beauty.
Visit one of New South Wales’ alluring botanic gardens for a relaxing day out, picnic on the grass, enjoy a meal or a coffee at a nearby café, explore carefully-curated gardens, rich woodlands and majestic rainforests sanctuaries that are home to so many native and exotic plants, birds and animals.
Standout NSW gardens include Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens at Mount Tomah, a 28 hectare cool-climate garden located just 90 minutes from Sydney. The garden has a collection of thousands of plants from the southern hemisphere and around the world. There are stunning views of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. There’s also a visitor’s centre and a fantastic local restaurant on site, Tomah Gardens Restaurant, with renowned Chef Sean Moran of Sean’s Panorama overseeing a fantastic local menu.
The Hunter Region Botanic Gardens at Heatherbrae are made up of more than 30 hectares of beautiful landscaped gardens and are home to more than 3,000 species of flora and fauna, with both native and exotic theme gardens. There are also plants for sale at the visitor centre. The Orange Botanic Gardens are another impressive natural paradise.
