Best family attractions in NSW
NSW has many attractions and destinations designed just for kids. A few of the best include the living maze at Amaze n Place at Alstonville, and the animal fun park, mini golf and new tree house playground at Macadamia Castle near Ballina.
At Magic Mountain in Merimbula the kids can careen down giant waterslides and the downhill toboggan, and take a Triassic Park tour, roller coaster ride or magic carpet slide. Timbertown, near Port Macquarie, is slightly more relaxing with horse rides and steam trains at this re-creation pioneer village.
Two of the state’s best adventure playgrounds are in Orange and Blayney in the central west. Orange has tunnels and a climbing wall amongst the usual attractions, while Blayney has a flying fox, giant chess game and ‘mouse house’.
Things to do in NSW for families
On the South Coast, Minnamurra Rainforest in Budderoo National Park has elevated boardwalks winding through rainforest across creeks to pretty Minnamurra Falls. Greenpatch, one of the most popular family beaches in Jervis Bay, has crystal clear shallow waters; the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk has panoramic views from the Southern Highlands escarpment to the coast.
On the North Coast, hire a canoe to explore the Hunter Wetlands at Shortland near Newcastle, see Australia’s tallest single-drop waterfall at Ellenborough Falls, inland from Taree or take the boardwalk through rainforest in Sea Acres Nature Reserve near Port Macquarie.
In Country NSW, you can learn about the Jurassic-Era Wollemi pine at the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mount Tomah, go on a cave tour in Jenolan Caves or follow the boardwalk to see the spectacular Fitzroy Falls in Morton National Park.
