In the Snowy Mountains, the Snowys Valley Way between Gundagai and Beechworth winds through pretty alpine country. Yarrangobilly Caves, 60 limestone caverns in the northern end of Kosciuszko National Park. The Kosciuszko Alpine Way threads its way through Kosciuszko National Park from Cooma to Khancoban. The chairlift at Thredbo and a gentle walk to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko – open 365 days a year.

In the Blue Mountains, the Greater Blue Mountains Drive is a series of trails that links Sydney with its World Heritage backyard. Don't miss the Zig Zag Railway and Glow Worm Tunnel on the Newnes Plateau section of the drive. There's also horse riding in the Megalong Valley, lookouts and forests on the Blackheath and Megalong route.

The Lakes Way that meanders around Myall Lakes National Park is perfect for sailing, kayaking, swimming and camping.  Sydney Melbourne Coastal Drive has plenty of family-friendly detours - turn off at Berry for Kangaroo Valley for canoeing on the beautiful Kangaroo River.
