Wollongong
Highlights
The Wollongong area is also shaping up as a fine food and wine destination, with talented chefs serving great local produce and premium wines. Kangaroo Valley, just west of Berry, is alive with some of Australia's richest livestock and produce.
Wollongong beaches
Wollongong is a coastal city with all the elements for a great beach holiday. There's a wide range of accommodation, surf shops, beachside cafes and parkland. It also has a stunning coastline that's dotted with rockpools, ocean baths, sand bars, sheltered beaches and great waves for experienced surfers.
Many of the beaches around Wollongong are positioned between the ocean and the green hills of the rocky Illawarra escarpment. The beaches north of Wollonging have their own flavour. Coalcliff Beach attracts families to its rockpool, uncrowded Coledale has a relaxed vibe and Austinmer is longtime favourite because of its rockpools and ocean baths. The most popular beaches are North Wollongong Beach and Wollongong City Beach which both have great waves as well as cycle paths, BBQs, shady trees and wading pools.
You can learn to surf with accredited surf schools at many Wollongong beaches. And, if you're an experienced surfer, check out the waves at Scarborough Beach, Thommos break at Coledale and Sandon Point.
