Kiama
Must do
Highlights
Kiama is famous for its blowhole. On the cliffs at Blowhole Point, waves surging into an underground cavity are compressed and forced upwards, exploding high into the air and accompanied by a loud 'oomph'. The strength varies according to the wind, waves and tides, and when it’s pumping, it always draws a crowd.
Beaches around Kiama
Famous for its surfing beaches and Blowhole, Kiama sits on a peninsula that rises from the sweeping curve of Bombo Beach. A beautiful coastline stretches north and south with plenty of choices in beach culture as well as waves and accredited surfing schools.
Killalea State Recreation Area is a spectacular coastal strip that is dedicated forever as a site for surfing, fishing, camping and beach walks. It is one of nine national surfing reserves in NSW. More great surfing beaches can be found at "Mystics", a local favourite that has some of the best surf beaches on the South Coast.
Surfers and body boarders love Werri Beach at Gerringong while Bombo Beach at Kiama is popular with experienced surfers and will host the NSW Open Surfmasters Titles in July.
Surf Beach is Kiama's main beach, patrolled in summer on weekends from October. It has sheltered bays for kids and shady picnic spots. Other family-friendly beaches are Easts Beach, Kendalls Beach, Seven Mile Beach at Gerroa, and Bombo Headland, which has an off-leash area for dogs.
