Highlights
Varied terrains in New South Wales are perfect for horse-riding adventures of all types. Depending on your level of expertise, you'll be able find a horse-riding experience to suit, close to home or further afield. Choose from trail rides and riding lessons, school holiday camps and wilderness rides.
Just one hour north of Sydney on the Central Coast is Glenworth Valley Horse Riding Centre, Australia’s largest horse-riding centre. The kids can have horse-riding lessons, enjoy pony rides or the easy trail rides for beginners. Euroka Equestrian Centre located in the Megalong Valley, two-hours' drive west of Sydney, has scenic rides through the bush wilderness of the Blue Mountains. Rides range from one hour to pony rides to a cellar door ride with lunch and wine-tasting included. You'll have the chance to ride along part of the iconic Six Foot Track.
Other places close to Sydney that offer a full range of guided horse riding, quality horses and scenic locations are in the Hunter Valley, Southern Highlands, Wollongong, Otford and Kangaroo Valley.
Make a holiday of your horse-riding experience and stay in a comfortable cabin, homestead, bunk-style accommodation or a farmstay. More adventurous riders can find horse-riding treks that include overnight campouts and week-long rides in rugged terrain such as in the Snowy Mountains. At Broken Hill in Outback NSW, you can even choose between riding a horse or a camel. Other unusual horse-riding experiences include a pub crawl on horseback and cellar door trail rides.
The Leconfield Jackaroo and Jillaroo School in the Hunter region teaches you how to be a real cowboy or cowgirl. That includes horseback riding, calf wrestling, lassoing, whip cracking and the art of natural horsemanship, a method of horse training popularised by the film, "The Horse Whisperer". There's also a Saddle Camp for girls only at Braidwood in the Queanbeyan area.
