Dance and performing arts in Sydney
Sydney is Australia's most cultured city, and you can be sure to find dance, ballet and opera performances, as well as a thriving theatre program, throughout winter.
The Australian Ballet presents a number of shows in the city's iconic Sydney Opera House over the winter period, including the ballet production of Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and The Dream. The Sydney Opera House's extensive program of shows also includes opera, classical music and plays.
The Sydney Dance Company is one of Australia's most innovative performance companies and has gone from strength to strength under Rafael Bonachela's leadership. Be sure to head down to Walsh Bay for a performance or even take a dance class of your own.
For indigenous performances, check out the world-famous Bangarra. The Bangarra Dance Theatre on Hickson Road is a centre that tells the story of ancient and modern Aboriginal dreamtime through dance.
Just down the road is the Sydney Theatre Company. Expect a choice of classical work mixed with plays by up-and-coming Australian writers.
Belvoir Street Theatre is an iconic venue in Sydney. Each night a new mystery guest from the exemplary roll-call of Indigenous performers is asked 20 questions. The questions are the same every night, but the answers will be very different. The idea is that out of this simple set-up comes a big, rich modern dreaming of story and song and a better understanding of how much more there is still to tell.
The Enmore Theatre is also home to some of the finest Australian-written and directed. As well as plays and bands, comedians perform regularly, and it's a great spot to discover up-and-coming talent.
