Balgownie Heritage School Museum - Balgownie
Founded in 1989, the Balgownie Primary School Museum aims to preserve the history of the Illawarra through the conservation of artifacts, documents, and photographs of the local area.
Enthusiastic volunteers have assembled an exhaustive collection of records tracing the mining and educational history of the area. Exhibits also include an impressive display of badges, medals and postcards from World War 1 to the present.
The collection at Balgownie Public School's Museum has a complete photographic record of all past students from 1890 on display as well as stories, letters and work samples from the early days of the school.
The carefully organised display rooms include a classroom-sized space; complete with a replica of an underground mine, where students can have lessons on aspects of the mining industry earlier this century.
