On either side of the harbour are the main beaches - Shellharbour North Beach and Shellharbour South Beach, near Bass Point Reserve, a significant heritage site. The reserve contains Aboriginal archaeological evidence, a rare littoral rainforest and in the waters off the point are six shipwrecks.
Join Shellharbour Scuba Centre for diving in Bass Point’s pristine marine area, home to a colourful array of creatures including endangered grey nurse sharks and weedy sea dragons. For underwater cliffs teeming with marine life, go snorkelling or diving at Bushrangers Bay Aquatic Reserve.
There are many spots for beach and rock fishing in Shellharbour, where you’ll find accommodation options to suit various budgets. Fishing and other water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing are popular too at Lake Illawarra, a large saltwater lagoon a short drive north of the village.
A short drive south are two famous National Surfing Reserve surf breaks – The Farm at Killalea Beach and Mystics at Minnamurra Beach. Both surf breaks are in Killalea State Recreation Area, a wonderful location in the Shellharbour region for camping, bushwalking, fishing and picnics.
