Bass Point is a popular spot for recreational visits, fishing, diving and walking. Bass Point contains one of the few littoral rainforest areas in the Illawarra. This area takes its name from the great Australian explorer - George Bass.
In May 1943, the American merchant ship 'Cities Services Boston' sank off Bass Point and although no sailors' lives were lost, four Australian soldiers who went to the aid of the ship's crew were drowned. An annual service remembers their bravery, and a memorial has been erected on site.
Aboriginal middens of national significance were discovered at this site. As you take the walk through the reserve you'll notice signs for the Aboriginal Interpretative Walk, which provides some insight into the lives and beliefs of the Wodi Wodi people that camped at this area.
Other features boat ramp, fishing, scuba diving, beaches and picnic tables are available (there are no barbecues).
Opening times
Summer 6.30am to 8pm (Winter: 6.30am - 5.30pm). Note: The gates will be locked to the public in the event of a total fire ban.
