Winter at Smiggin Holes

Of Scottish origin, the name refers to holes in the ground left by cattle licking up rock salt. Tucked inside a protected snow bowl, Smiggin Holes is sheltered from the harsher weather of the Snowy Mountains and popular with families.

Skiing & snowboarding

‘Smiggins’ as it’s known, is one of the best beginner ski resorts on the Australian snowfields. The moderate conditions make it a great place for kids to learn how to ski and snowboard, while also catering for all levels of ability. Skiing and snowboarding lessons are available for both children and adults.

The family-friendly resort is easy to get to from the neighbouring ski areas of Perisher Valley, Guthega and Blue Cow. There are also two cross-country skiing trails nearby to explore; a 2km beginner trail, and a 4km beginner/intermediate trail, where you can enjoy wilderness areas at your own pace.

Hiking & bushwalking

Bushwalking and hiking are popular activities in the warmer months. The Mount Piper Trail has a snowshoe trail during snow season but it’s also an enjoyable walk out of season. The track is about 5km long and takes less than three hours to complete.

For a shorter walk, try the 3km Aqueduct Hut Trail, or for a more challenging journey, the 14km Pipers Creek Trail. There are also guided bushwalks which pass through the area.
