A sporting town
On Saturday nights in Dareton, locals from surrounding districts gather at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club to enjoy live entertainment, share a meal and catch up on the week’s happenings. The club is affiliated with other local sporting clubs and supports many races and competitions throughout the year.
Dareton sits on the bank of the Murray River in the Sunraysia district of Outback NSW, 25 km north-west of Mildura. Developed as a result of the World War II soldier settlement scheme, Dareton grew with the expansion of irrigation and the development of agriculture in the Wentworth area.
Today, you can visit many farms and orchards to buy local grapes, dried fruit and citrus straight from the farm gate. There are also plenty of good riverside spots for fishing for Murray cod and golden perch.
Also on the bank of the Murray River, the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club is the centre of activity in this community-focused town. Visitors interested in lawn bowls, indoor bowls, angling, cycling, triathlons and cricket should check out the annual calendar of events for popular races and competitions organised between local sporting clubs. There’s even a mountain(less) bike riding club with challenging events throughout the year.
Attached to the sporting club is the Coomealla Golf Club, with greens attracting players from as far as Adelaide. The club schedules regular tournaments, and visitors can take advantage of stay-and-play packages on offer.
