Getting to Outback NSW
You'll find a world of breathtaking experiences in Outback NSW - bush camping by a river, hiking through rugged national parks and admiring exquisite Aboriginal rock art. While Outback NSW may be remote, getting there is easy.
From Sydney, fly to Broken Hill, the unofficial capital of Outback NSW, with Regional Express or on board CountryLink’s Outback Xplorer or Indian Pacific services from Central Station. If you have more time, let someone else do the driving and travel by coach from Sydney. From Broken Hill, you can travel around the region with local tour operators.
If you're travelling from Melbourne, Regional Express and Qantas fly to Mildura from where you can transfer by coach to Broken Hill. From Adelaide, it's a direct flight with Regional Express or a 7-hour trip on an Indian Pacific train.
If self-drive is your preferred way of travelling, follow the Darling River Run, a meandering drive that connects the towns of Outback NSW. This 730-km drive follows the Darling River from the outback town of Walgett in north-western NSW to Wentworth on the Victorian border. It's an amazing journey through isolated outback towns that were once thriving ports on the river - Bourke, Louth, Tilpa, Wilcannia and Wentworth.
Road conditions in NSW can vary from multi-lane motorways to single-lane roads. Always check road and weather conditions prior to travelling to remote areas and drive at a safe speed, especially on unsealed roads. There are many remote places that are easily accessible in a conventional vehicle. But, if you have a 4WD, the opportunities for exploration and discovery are even better.
