Family day out to Newcastle
What about a dip at the Merewether Ocean Baths in Newcastle? In three hours from Sydney Central on the Intercity Line you can be in Sydney’s second largest city.
Family day trips from Sydney to Newcastle
For $2.50 per person, your family can enjoy a fun day out with unlimited travel on Sydney's buses, trains, ferries and light rail every Sunday. Popular destinations close to Sydney on the Family Funday Sunday ticket includes the Hawkesbury, Newcastle, Maitland and on to Dungog or Scone in the Hunter Valley.
The train trip north of Sydney takes you through breathtaking scenery for much of the journey, guaranteed to keep the whole family entertained. Crossing the Hawkesbury River is a beautiful highlight, with its small islands and oyster farms. Further north, you’ll pass through Woy Woy, Gosford and Wyong before arriving in Newcastle.
There’s plenty to explore in this casual coastal city so don’t forget to pack a picnic, beach ball and frisbee. Start with a refreshing dip at Newcastle Canoe Pool or Newcastle Baths, next to Newcastle Beach, or head to Bar Beach, perfect for families with its sheltered rockpool. There are plenty of restaurants and accommodation options in Newcastle if you want to stay for longer.
An alternative day out is to continue on to Maitland in the Hunter Valley, follow an easy heritage walk and stop at a cafe for lunch.
