South West Rocks lies at the mouth of the Macleay River, a half-hour drive from Kempsey. Most visitors come here for the beaches in the area that include Horseshoe Bay, Main Beach, Little Bay, Gap Beach and Smoky Beach. Beginners and experienced surfers will both find waves to suit them and there are plenty of surf schools at which to learn.
The area is renowned for fishing, snorkelling and diving. Fish Rock Cave, 2 km offshore from Smoky Cape Lighthouse, offers excellent dive conditions - you'll spot grey nurse sharks, turtles and spotted eagle rays.
Nearby Crescent Head is famous for having one of the best right-hand point breaks in the world thats' been attracting surfers since the 1950s.

Always swim between the red and yellow flags. Surf lifesavers have identified this area as the safest spot to swim in the water. It's also a good idea to always swim with a friend.
Make sure you read any safety signs at the beach and you are always welcome to ask lifeguards for more safety advice. If you find yourself needing help in the water, stay calm and attract attention.
