Bush walking and birdwatching on Lord Howe Island

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful islands in the Pacific, Lord Howe Island is a nature lover’s paradise.

Although only 11km long and 2km wide, Lord Howe Island has many bushwalking options for a wide range of abilities. The most challenging is undoubtedly the Mt Gower hike, an 8-hour walk led by an experienced guide where ropes are required in challenging parts of the climb. This hike is rated as one of the best day treks in the world.

There are many other hikes that are less challenging - such as climbing the 147m “mountain”, Eliza, to enjoy panoramic views across the lagoon; or a two-hour return trip to pretty North Bay. You can also take a leisurely stroll through lush, forest canopies.

Lord Howe Island is Australia’s premier birdwatching destination, with 14 species of seabirds breeding in the hundreds of thousands. From September to May, you can watch red-tailed tropic birds as they perform their airborne courting rituals, or shearwaters as they return to the island at dusk each day.

The island also has more than 130 permanent and migratory bird species, including the Lord Howe Island woodhen – a flightless endemic species saved from extinction by a local conservation effort. Several expert guides on the island run birdwatching tours and walks.
