Getting around the Hunter Valley

With over 150 wineries and cellar doors, plus award-winning restaurants, beautiful produce and gourmet trails, the Hunter Valley is one of Australia's most sophisticated food and wine regions. The most enjoyable way to get around the Hunter Valley is on tour with a local guide who knows where to go for the best shiraz or chardonnay, the freshest produce and the best cheeses.

Getting to the Hunter Valley

Getting to the beautiful Hunter Valley wine region has never been so easy. About 150km north of Sydney, this stunning food and wine region is easily accessible by car, train or tour.

The most direct route by car follows the F3 freeway, an easy drive that takes about two hours from Sydney. Follow the Cessnock/Hunter Valley Vineyards exit sign to Cessnock, the nearest Hunter Valley town to Sydney. Tourist Route T33 is an alternative drive passing through scenic mountains and in to the Hunter Valley via historic Wollombi. 

Daily train services depart from Sydney’s Central Station for the Hunter towns of Maitland, Newcastle or Singleton. Connecting buses and tours will help you explore the area further.

If you'd like someone else to do the driving, several operators run day tours from Sydney and Newcastle. Once in the Hunter Valley, you’ll find several tour operators who specialise in vineyard tours. Hunter Valley Wine Country Tourism Visitors Centre can help you plan your trip.

Flying to the Hunter Valley is another option with daily flights from Sydney to Newcastle Airport, from where you can hire a car. Some luxury properties, such as Tower Lodge, have helicopter access onsite or can arrange a 25-minute flight to Cessnock Airport from Sydney.
