Delicious Southern Highlands

From cool-climate wines to exquisite restaurants and classic country pubs, the beautiful Southern Highlands is perfect for a tasty adventure. In the tranquil countryside it is easy to unwind and relax on a day trip or weekend escape. You’ll find a delicious range of experiences, including winery tours.

The fertile soils, high altitude and seasonal changes are ideal for cool-climate vineyards and a wide range of quality produce. Local specialties include Angus beef, goats, Toulouse geese, Wessex saddleback pigs, yabbies, cheeses, olives and olive oil, truffles, berries and cherries, and pome fruits.

More than 60 vineyards and over a dozen cellar doors are in this picturesque region. The drive from Sydney to Bowral is only 90 minutes and under two hours from Canberra. Alternatively, you can travel by train and join a wine-tasting tour, such as Grape Escape or Highlands Food and Wine Tours.

Some of the well-known wineries are Artemis Wines and Tertini Wines near Mittagong, Centennial Vineyards and Diamond Creek Estate near Bowral, Joadja Estate near Berrima, Cuttaway Hill Wines and Southern Highland Wines near Sutton Forest, and Banjo’s Run and St Maur Wines near Exeter.

Check out the events calendar for celebrations such as the Southern Highlands Food and Wine Festival. For award-winning dining, reserve a table at Biota Dining and Eschalot. There are plenty more delicious restaurants and cafes, such as Bernies Diner, which opened in Moss Vale in 1925.

Among the country pubs are the convict-built General Surveyor Inn, in Berrima, and the Burrawang Village Hotel – enjoy a drink in the beer garden for great views. A short drive northeast is Robertson and the famous Robertson Pie Shop. You can buy local cheeses at the old Robertson Cheese Factory.
