Southern Highlands Food and Wine
The first vines were planted here in 1983. Although young, the Southern Highlands’ wine scene is home to more than 60 vineyards specialising in pinot noir and pinot gris. The region encompasses the towns of Exeter, Moss Vale, Sutton Forrest, Bowral, Berrima and Mittagong.

Pinot noir and pinot gris are acknowledged specialties of the region, however the area’s wine producers are also cultivating impressive cool-climate chardonnay, merlot, riesling, sauvignon blanc and shiraz, as well as producing award-winning sparkling wines.
For a memorable fine dining experience, stop in at the award-winning Biota Dining in Bowral, that supports local growers with its menu focusing on seasonal artisan produce. Eschalot in Berrima operates from a beautiful heritage sandstone building and offers flavours highlighting regional European influences. Bernie’s Diner in Moss Vale first opened its doors in 1925 and serves classic diner-style food, while Café Rosso in Bowral specialises in Italian food.
Tennessee Orchard features a farm gate shed where you can purchase local produce. The Old Robertson Cheese Factory stocks a wide range of local and imported cheeses and has an on-site café. The forested areas in the region are also home to several truffle farms as well as the popular Li-Sun Exotic Mushroom Tunnel Tour, run three times a year by FoodPath.
Wander through the fruit trees and purchase a range of jams, jellies and other condiments all prepared on-site. Accommodation is also available at the Montrose Cottage, first built in 1861 and surrounded by a lush English garden.
Meet the people behind the produce on a farm tour, market tour or walking tour. FoodPath also runs group workshops and cooking classes covering preserving, jam making, sausage production, pizza and pastry making.
Biota Dining in Bowral has won numerous awards for its food, wine list and sustainable practice. The restaurant takes the words “locally-produced” to a new level, with many of the ingredients on the menu grown metres from diner’s tables.
