Arts, culture and heritage in West Wyalong
Walk the "crooked mile", West Wyalong's unique main street. It was originally a bullock track, which wound around gold diggings and old tree stumps. Along the Wyalong Heritage Walk, you'll see historic architecture from the 1890s before the population centre moved west.
About West Wyalong
The twin towns of Wyalong and West Wyalong retain a feel of the bygone gold era, with many historic buildings, old-style shop facades and wrought iron verandahs. Situated at the intersection of the Newell and Mid Western highways, 139 km south-west of Parkes, West Wyalong rose from the plains following the discovery of gold in 1893.
The town pays tribute to its gold-mining history with parks and museums such as the West Wyalong Museum and the 25-metre Poppet Head (the structure above a mine shaft) at True Blue Mine. Nearby historic bush villages of Tallimba, Ungarie, Weethalle, Barmedman and Mirrool are well worth a visit. Find out more from West Wyalong Visitor Information Centre.
