Known as Celtic Country because of the early European settlers and verdant countryside reminiscent of the Scottish highlands, Glen Innes built the intriguing Australian Standing Stones as a tribute to its pioneers. The annual Australian Celtic Festival in May is a highlight of the wonderful events calendar.
This pretty area of New England is on the Fossickers Ways touring route and nicknamed gemstone country because of the sapphires and other gems discovered. Pick up a fossicking map from the Glen Innes Visitor Information Centre and try your luck searching for sapphires and other gems.
You’ll discover more gems at the Minerama Fossicking, Gem and Jewellery Show in March, the largest of its kind in NSW. Other marvellous things to do include visiting the Land of Beardies History House Museum and the Emmaville Mining Museum and taking a Country Art Escapes cultural tour.
For memorable journeys into the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, explore walking and hiking trails in the Washpool National Park and Gibraltar Range National Park. The Washpool walking track departs from a campground and loops through stands of ancient rainforest.

You can travel by air or train from Sydney to Armidale and rent a car or board a bus for Glen Innes. The drive from Sydney is nearly seven hours and from Brisbane is 4 h 20 min.
