Blue Mountains Discovery Trail
One of the best ways to enjoy the stunning natural scenery of the Blue Mountains is on the clifftop drive between Katoomba and Wentworth Falls. Lookouts, picnic areas and walking trails are located along the drive.
Natural attractions in the Blue Mountains
Bushwalking is a favourite outdoor activity in the Blue Mountains National Park, which is at the centre of a World Heritage landscape of massive cliffs, deep rainforested-gullies and sandstone canyons that glisten with waterfalls. There are hundreds of walking tracks in the area taking you past lookouts with breathtaking views of the valleys and mountains in this pristine region. There's a lot to explore here so take your time and get off the beaten track. Enjoy a drive along the loops and trails that make up the 1,200-km Greater Blue Mountains Drive, a journey which links the spectacular landscape of the region in a series of Discovery Trails. Go horse riding in the pretty Megalong Valley or, if you're seeking something more adventurous, go abseiling in Wollemi National Park, also part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.
Take a guided tour of Jenolan Caves, about 74 km from Katoomba, to see the magnificent Lucas, Imperial or Chifley Caves or, if you have more time, wander through the Orient Cave which has delicate crystalline decorations. Visit the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah to see one of the world's oldest and rarest plants, the Wollemi Pine. Located on the Bells Line of Road, about 50 km from Katoomba, this beautiful garden is Australia's premier cool-climate botanic garden with sweeping vistas over the mountains and more than 40,000 native, exotic and rare plants.
