Tumbarumba is home to many of Australia’s best sparkling wines made from pinot noir and chardonnay. Drought in recent years has seen the region produce delicious table wines from these varieties and sauvignon blanc, in vineyards clustered between 500 and 800 m altitude.
A group of dedicated vignerons who represent the cutting edge of cool-climate grape growing make wines with higher acidity than the fruit grown on the cool, high slopes of the Snowy Mountains. At these altitudes, the cool sunlight helps the grapes retain their highly prized, delicate flavours.
Tumbarumba fruit is also helping Chalkers Crossing and a variety of other NSW producers add a certain finesse to their wines. A large quantity of the region’s fruit leaves the State to be used for wines that appear under famous labels such as Arras and Yattarna.
