Why go there

The Warrumbungle National Park Discovery Program offers two tours using Aboriginal guides from the local Gamilaroi people.

The first is a walk through quandong groves to Tara Cave, an Aboriginal site that was occupied by humans for more than 4,000 years.

This easy stroll gives the visitor an understanding of the first people to live in the area, including their bush tucker and traditional use of the land. The guides also shed light on a range of artefacts collected in the area.

On the Sundancin’ Tour you’ll need your own vehicle to follow the ranger and his companion - a local Aboriginal Elder.

The journey begins with a trip out to the Sandstone Caves in the Pilliga Nature Reserve, through thick forest favoured by a variety of birdlife. During the easy walk to the fragile and beautiful caves, your guide will explain the use of various plants, both for food and medicine.

Don’t miss

  • Learning about life on an Aboriginal mission from a local elder
  • The chance to see endangered species, like the brush tailed rock wallaby, the regent honeyeater, and the superb parrot
