Eating Out – Newcastle

Reporter: FELICITY URQUHART

Sydney Weekender goes beyond the Sydney Metro to check out some of Newcastle’s best!

Scratchleys On The Wharf
Newcastle was always that industrial city to the north of Sydney – somewhere you drove past on the way north. These days Newcastle is a destination in itself. It’s still a working harbour but the foreshore area has undergone a bit of a refurb – and there is great scenery, nice walks and a lovely place to eat right on the water.

Scratchleys On The Wharf is one of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley's most popular restaurants, and with good reason. Overlooking the busy port of Newcastle Harbour, Scratchleys offers the best food, the best wine and the best view in the region.

From the tastiest range of succulent seafood and sizzling steaks on the menu, through to the range of finest wines from the Hunter Valley, other noted wine-making regions of Australia and overseas, Scratchleys On The Wharf will delight even the most discerning diner, whether a Novocastrian or a visitor to Newcastle. The menu is selected by the Hunter Valley's premier chefs, and as well as the regular menu items, seasonal specialities and daily specials are also available.

Scratchleys On The Wharf is the ultimate Newcastle restaurant for a romantic dinner for two, an enjoyable group get-together, a meal before heading to the Civic Theatre or catching a live band, or just relaxing with a drink at the end of the day whilst overlooking Newcastle Harbour and watching the ships roll in. Even if you aren't stopping in, Scratchleys On The Wharf have a takeaway window on the footpath, so you can enjoy an outdoor bite on the Newcastle Foreshore or in the Honeysuckle precinct.

 Bacchus
This is one of Newcastle’s newest and hottest restaurants and something you’d expect to see in the posh Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.

Bacchus is an elegant space reminiscent of the Victorian era’s grace and charm.
The restaurant and wine bar occupies a historic building complete with stunning chandeliers, leather chaise lounges and red velvet curtains. Guests can either dine in the restaurant a la carte or relax in the lounge and order from an extensive tapas menu until late.

Bacchus has an enormous wine cellar and impressive cocktail list which in the winter months can be sampled in front of open fireplaces. On Sunday afternoons, a traditional High Tea is offered, by appointment, in antique fine bone china and silver teapots.

Bacchus has a number of menu options catering for all tastes and dining experiences. Fine dining is perfect for those special occasions and the more informal tapas menu is designed to be shared amongst friends. The "lunch on the terrace" option is for those who are looking for a casual lunch while watching the world go by in the sun on the terrace.

Some of the dishes you may find on the menu:

Entrees
• Tian of Crepe with king prawns, smoked salmon and asparagus
• Duck & Rabbit Terrine with beetroot relish and walnut salad
• Samba Oysters – selection of oysters served 6 different ways – spicy pineapple salsa, confit tomato, black peppercorn, horseradish cream, salsa verde)
