Natural attractions in the Riverina

Stretching from the western foothills of the Great Dividing Range to the Outback, the Riverina is a study in contrasts, from sun-seared plains to green oases. This sprawling region includes Wagga Wagga, the state’s largest inland city, and the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, one of our most productive agricultural regions. Other towns and cities include Griffith, Junee, Leeton, Deniliquin and Hay.

Natural attractions

  • Just 11 kilometres north of Griffith, Lake Wyangan is ideal for camping, picnics, barbecues, fishing and boating.
  • See the world’s favourite marsupials, koalas, in Narrandera Nature Reserve and neighbouring state forest.
  • Lake Centenary, near Temora, is a popular 22-hectare lake with three small islands, perfect for sailing, canoeing, fishing, swimming and picnics.
  • At Ingalba Nature Reserve near Temora, the flowering ironbarks attract several species of honeyeaters and superb parrots.
  • North of Hay, Willandra National Park has prolific bird and animal life.

Living history

  • At Big Willandra Station, the early 20th century homestead and its outbuildings are an outstanding example of an outback pastoral property.
  • South-east from Griffith, Leeton has many outstanding examples of art deco architecture.
  • The Hay Prisoner of War and Internment Camp Interpretive Centre tells the remarkable story of the town’s role in World War II.
  • Temora Aviation Museum has one of the world's finest collections of flying historic aircraft from Spitfires to bombers, Tiger Moths to Australian-built Vampires.
  • Some 40 kilometres north of Wagga Wagga, Coolamon has four museums that provide an illuminating insight into rural life.
  • The Up-to-Date Store in Coolamon is a precious example of an early 1900s general emporium, now a cultural centre and museum.
  • Shear Outback: The Australian Shearers’ Hall of Fame in Hay is a tribute to the “jumbuck barbers” who snip the wool from the country’s 120 million sheep.
