Escape, relax and explore ancient beech forests and rainforest
This mosaic of eucalypt forests, rainforest, subalpine woodlands, swamps and grasslands is part of the awe-inspiring World Heritage Gondwana Rainforest. There are few rainforests anywhere in the world that are easier to reach- it’s an easy drive north from Sydney.
The park consists of a 25-kilometre-long plateau set among long-extinct volcanoes. It’s accessible via a network of short, easy walks and steep, overnight treks that criss-crosses the terrain.
Villages in the area include charming Gloucester, Stroud, Paterson, Dungog and Clarence Town.
The list of wildlife in Barrington Tops is astonishing. Kangaroos, wallabies, platypus, bandicoots, gliders and koalas inhabit the thick woods and valleys. There are three-toed earless skinks, stuttering frogs, grey-headed flying-foxes and short-beaked echidnas as well as profuse birdlife.
